HE>i. (and the story behind the brand)

NOTE:  There is a more recent feature post about HE>i on THIS LINK!

Aloha!

If you’ve looked at more than one or two pictures of my family, no doubt you’ve noticed that all three of my boys often wear t-shirts, stickers, sunglasses, (you -name-it,) with the HE>i logo…

This brand is locally designed by a couple guys here on the North Shore of Oahu, which is really cool.

BUT, some of you have asked–what does it mean?
I know I personally saw these bumper stickers and t-shirts for many months before I figured it out.

I would quietly ponder “Heki…with a backwards ‘k‘?” I knew it was something tricky but didn’t want to voice my ignorance, for fear that I was the only one…

Until it finally clicked and I recognized:   “HE>i.”  “HE greater than i.”  Aha!  I GET IT!

In my own words…it is a way to acknowledge that “HE” (God,) is the Creator…and Holy and Perfect, and “i” humbly, am not.

The brief story of the logo, as told on their t-shirt labels, goes back to 2003 when a group of friends from the north shore of Oahu found the HE>i symbols as a clever thing to put on the main screen of their cell phone.  The verse John 3:30 from the bible came to mind.  “He must become greater and greater.  I must become less and less.”  The phrase stuck and spread quickly among their friends.  It wasn’t long before demand for t-shirts and stickers (and now hats and sunglasses and on and on…) was high.  You see cars all over the island with the logo on bumper stickers and now many mainlanders are catching on as well.

It’s a great conversation starter with a simple, but profound message.

So now it decorates our toys…

and of course our cars…

SO…if you want to get your hands on some cool HE>i stuff, you can go to their store in Haleiwa, Honolulu, or Newport Beach, California.

Or you can go to their online store, HERE.

Glad you stopped by and hope you’ll check out my HOME page to read my latest blog posts! 😉
You can read about my North Shore Oahu Favorite places (to eat, visit, shop, hang at the beach, etc.) HERE.  I also have a list of most popular “parenting boy” posts HERE.  And a recipe file here.  🙂  ALOHA!

Monica

Monica, thank you so much for this awesome idea. My wife works at a hotel in Arizona, which accommodated a group associated with this symbol.

The group left many handbags and wristbands. She gave me one, and asked me what it meant. Being a teacher and having been a Returned Missionary for my church, I immediately knew what scripture it was referring to, as well as the “greater than” from Math.

I informed my wife what I thought it meant, before we typed the symbol in Google search.

I am so proud of this wristband. U have already had a few people ask me about the meaning, both old and young, and have donned it ever since my wife presented it to me.

If you left it, by accident, I will return it. If not, I want to thank you so much for providing such a simple, yet profound tool to spread the gospel, today.

Crazy! I had an identical experience, working through the meaning and or the symbology every time I saw the logo. One day that little lightbulb above my head clicked on and it became abundantly clear what the message was.
Perfection! Thank you for sharing and for reaffirming my faith in people recognizing how important HE is.

I was riding down the street on Vickie Drive in Del city, Oklahoma when I saw two cars in the driveway with your logo. I asked my husband if he knew what He’l with the backwards K meant. He said he didn’t know. So I looked it up and saw what a great meaning it is. I’d love to have some of your gear. How can I purchase some? Are there any stores on the mainland (preferably near Oklahoma City) that sell ‘HE greater than I’ wear?

We have been visiting here from Calgary Canada for the past 5 weeks and will be going home to Canada at the end of next week. We were to Haleiwa and the North Shore on a couple of occasions. We saw a number of these decals and were unable to determine its meaning. Thank heavens for the internet. Thanks for making such a small “word” say it all.
