There are just a few things in life that I get really excited about. Okay, that’s not true–I get excited about all kinds of things. But at the top of my list: My kids. My husband. Great food. Running a Marathon….
AND COFFEE!!
Seriously. Coffee is one of God’s best-ever ideas, don’t you think!?
And if coffee is good–then tell me WHAT could be better than LOCALLY GROWN, LOCALLY ROASTED…
HAWAIIAN COFFEE!?
Nothing. That’s what. Absolutely nothing.
So, excuse my enthusiasm, as I tell you about the NEW Coffee Farm not far from our home.
Green World Farms is located (brilliantly,) right on the way to the North Shore, just outside of Wahiawa, before you get to the Dole Plantation. Owner, Howard Green; and Master Roaster, John Alvarez have teamed up to grow, roast, and brew some of the best Hawaiian coffee you can imagine.
And they even have a spacious coffee house to sit and enjoy a cup or two…
Greenworld Farms has been open for just over six months, but the plans were set in motion over three years ago. Coffee trees were planted, and the visitor center was built. And every time I drove by I would start tweaking…just a little.
Now complete, the coffee shop is seeing more traffic all of the time. Locals love it. Tourists traveling to the North shore appreciate the free coffee samples, friendly espresso bar, and the awesome variety of gifts in the visitor center. (Not to mention the clean, public restrooms! :)) Free internet and spacious tables are a big draw for me and my homeschool crew (on our way to the south shore beaches!)
There are nearly two thousand coffee trees in the ground now, and more being planted all of the time.
If you’re a coffee expert–and interested in specific tree types and all of that, here’s what owner, Howard Green said: “All of the trees are Arabica. Some of those are Kona Typica, which is a Guatemalan derivative, and Red Catuai, which is a Brazilian semi-dwarf variety in use on Molokai and Maui, which grows well in Oahu conditions. We picked several thousand pounds of cherries this year, our first production year. We expect that to climb above 50,000 pounds of coffee cherries by the time the trees are fully producing.” (Midweek News, Feb. 2013.)
Mr. Green plans to plant more than 5,000 more trees. They also buy green coffee beans grown in Waialua, on Molokai, on Maui and in Kona, and then roasts the beans daily for top freshness and flavor.
The coffee house itself has a warm, welcome feel from the moment you enter. Open-air, with high ceilings, and custom wood work, Green World is tastefully done. I especially love the retro coffee art all over the walls. I could just sit and read signs all day. (and drink lots of coffee.) They have a nice variety of snacks–both sweet and savory as well!
Local soaps, salad dressings, coffee mugs, and more are available for purchase.
The employees are all very friendly. And well-caffeinated. 🙂
The 5000 square foot Visitor Center/Coffee stop is situated on 7.5 acres of land.
Just out back of the visitor center you’ll find trees with pretty little Coffee berries growing.
Have you ever seen a coffee plant before? I think I’m in love. Now Dave and I are really considering growing some.
Green World has plenty of outdoor seating. Good for people and their four-legged friends.
Sometime before the end of the year, Greenworld will have coffee available to order at their website. (I’ll keep ya posted on that.) Don’t you think that Hawaiian coffee would make for some really nice Christmas gifts…
SO—until you can order on line, you’ll have to visit Green World to try some of their delicious coffee.
OR–you can enter to be ONE OF TWO LUCKY GROMMOM WINNERS, and receive a POUND OF HAWAIIAN COFFEE in the mail next week!
Now wouldn’t that be nice right about now?…
Just comment below, sharing your love for coffee. Tell us why you love it, how you love it—Black? Cream and sugar? (I like just some cream, FYI.) Do you like flavored coffees? (I don’t, in case you wonder.) How about espresso drinks? (yum!) It doesn’t matter–I just want to talk about coffee. (And drink coffee.) All day long.
I’ll choose TWO winners on Sunday night and announce the winner next Monday!! So spread the word and have fun!
(and as always, subscribers to the grommom always get an extra entry. :))
**A special thank you to John Alvarez and Howard Green for allowing me to feature their coffee farm here, and for donating the coffee to our winners. I promise to spend many hours at your coffee shop as a thank-you. (sorry.)
Find Green World on Facebook HERE.
Much Aloha to you all,
Grommom
PS Dave and I laughed our heads off at this Brian Regan comedy segment about ordering his coffee BLACK…I thought a few of you coffee fans might enjoy this today!

My wife and I enjoyed our visit to the island, but really enjoyed finding your coffee store. What an experience we had having a fresh cup of your flavorful roasted coffee. Also the store had several items that my wife could not resist taking home. I on the other hand, could not leave without crabbing several pounds of your coffee. The problem I have now is that I ran out of the coffee and am looking for a way to restock my supply. I’ve been waiting for your on-line system to become available. Please hurry! Signed, impatient coffee drinker.
me loooovvveee coffeeeeeee. yummmm yummmmm 🙂
A big Shaka-Brah from Texas. Congrats to John and Green World Farms. It’s been a few years in the making and a lot of hard work.
I like my coffee with some cream and sugar…it’s like candy I guess. 😛
I can always use another bag of the Green World kind.
Yes, I love this post! I agree Monica – coffee is definitely a gift to us from God. 🙂 I am a pretty “serious” coffee drinker. I only drink good quality stuff and never flavored. Just a little dash of (hopefully organic) cream for me!
My favorite coffee drink is a double shot of espresso over ice w/ a little cream. That’s it – simple, strong, and refreshing! I can’t wait to visit this place you have posted about. Thanks!
Growing up in Mexico my grandmother used to give us coffee with cream and sugar and a slice of cinnamon toast for afternoon snack, it was perfectly normal for kids to drink coffee (I doubt it was decaf)! And I still love my coffee with cream and sugar, and the slice of cinnamon toast is always a plus 😉
I will admit I do not like coffee. But my hubby does so I am entering on his behalf:)
My favorite way to have coffee is actually in coffee ice cream. It’s amazing!
i agree!!!
aloha
I love my coffee with a bit of cream. And flavored coffee…… I used to buy a Coconut coffee here in WA. , sadly the gentleman who roasted it passed a few years ago. I have yet to find a substitute as good as his. Think HUGE flakes of Coconut. YUM!!!
I am meant descent not decent, need more coffee.
You don’t need to enter me, but i had to say this place looks awesome! I am of Cuban decent, I was drinking cafe con leche in my baby bottle…;) My favorite breakfast as a child was Cuban bread and butter with sweet coffee and milk. I love coffee, (I need coffee) the taste, and the smell of the beans, I like some flavored, but usually only coconut, or something exotic. I love espresso, and pretty much all kinds of coffee drinks, hot or cold. First thing I do when I wake up is start a pot of coffee, its the only way to really get my day started. 🙂
Haha…I can’t wait to get you over here Jehan! We can drink a lot of coffee together! 🙂
I’ve heard a few of you mention coconut coffee, so now I must try that. I’ve never tried it but I could see that being really good.
Much aloha to you–and of course you’re entered in the contest! 🙂
I have turned into an avid morning coffee drinker. I need my coffee to get the cobwebs cleared. As much as I love it, I am very simple. Plain jane coffee with a little bit of Natural Bliss Sweet Cream Creamer. Heaven in a cup. My two boys are also coffee fans but they like “kid coffee”. Basically coffee flavored milk with a dab of sugar. They also think it is a morning must, but they only get it on the weekends.
You know I am sooo with you, Monica. 🙂 I could talk about my love for coffee for a long time! I drink mine the same as you – a little cream, and I only drink the “real” stuff. I tend to like darker roasts – and NEVER decaf! I really love Waialua coffee, good quality Hawaiian peaberry blend (I hoard it!), and the organic Italian roast from Whole Foods… I haven’t stopped by this place yet – but I can’t wait to try it! 🙂
It would be a great place for us to meet, Danielle! Let’s keep trying!! 🙂 ALOHA
I started drinking coffee my first year teaching because the teacher next door was a warm Cuban who ran a small coffee bar in the back of his room. Suddenly, around 2:00 every day, an iced coffee would appear in the hands of a student from his class. I was hooked! I take my coffee with cream and sugar-and I too can drink all day!
Wow Amber, What a sweet story!! What a nice man. I’d like a job like that! 🙂 I hope to have coffee with you one day before too long! I have a feeling we’d have plenty to chat about!!
I’m a straight latte girl. I like a smooth nutty blend (decaf now) with almond milk foamed all up to perfection. The shots must pour straight into my mug so as to not lose even a bit of that caramel crema. We are on espresso maker #9 of the same exact model because we love it and we bought it from a store with a great return policy. My hubs walks through the door with our machine, they nod, he walks out with a new one. Manufacturer’s defect that apparently never gets fixed. Works for us! Then there’s the mug. The right mug is critical. What kind of mood am in that morning? Do I need a normal sized latte or was I up late the night before and in need of a big-mug? Each of my faves rings of the sea and makes me feel like the early morning moments in my blue-wall Saltillo-tiled casita could be on the sand with salty air blowing in through the windows. Oh wait, that’s just the A/C. My morning latte is part of what sets the day on course and my attitude on “chill”…
I love that Corinne! Your lattes sound pretty amazing!
I’m absolutely with you on the mug thing…It is a huge part of the taste of the coffee!
And your house sounds lovely…I’d take A/C, but for us we only get open doors and a breeze on a good day. 🙂 I suppose you couldn’t live without A/C!
Hi Monica,
First I have to say I have some feedback to give about your marathon that I hope can be helpful I’ll get back to you on that. I also know you will ROCK!!!
Now on to coffee.Cream and sugar in the morning , black agfter dinnerNever flavored…
God bless you my fellow coffee lover =)
Can’t wait to chat Teresa! I know you have a lot of running wisdom for me! Thank you for the encouragement. And lets have coffee soon. OK? 🙂
This Coffee looks Like its Gonna taste very , rich , flavorful , yejut Smooth, which is just How I Love my daily Morning Cup ! Very hot with Vanilla Creamer and whatever is left is for Iced Coffee later ! Yum 🙂 …oh and the Perfect Mug makes it taste better too lol
I totally agree about the mug! I have a fettish for mugs…and I’m very particular! aloha!
OOPS! I like my coffee with cinnamon and half and half!
I will definitely stop by on my next trip to town!
The coffee lover in our house is my husband. I’ll take the credit (or blame) for turning him to coffee a few years ago when he would’ve promptly turned down any offers for coffee. He likes his cuppa filled with half espresso, half 2% cow’s milk and 2 T sugar. All that times two and sometimes three, on the weekend.
The ironic part is that the one who needs coffee the most (me: the one who wakes up multiple times at night for the baby) doesn’t even drink it.
I adore coffee! It is my first thought when I wake up in the morning. Medium roast with 2% milk and a little bit of sugar. And Hawaiian coffee is the best! Hope I win. 🙂
Love coffee! My latest obsession has been a pumpkin iced coffee on my way to work. My husband gives me such a hard time for the amount of cream and sugar I use, but I think that’s because he drinks it black!
I obviously missed the part about the giveaway…lol. I have two pretty large cups a day. I like to put honey and some almond milk in mine. I could drink it all day long, but then I couldn’t sleep at night. The smell, ever since I was a little kid watching my dad drink it on long trips to NorCal, I have loved that smell. It’s like being covered with it when you are smelling that wonderful aroma.
I love visiting the Kauai Coffee Company when we go to Kauai. Its so fun to taste all the different coffee and see how it is grown. We make sure to stock up on coffee when we visit! I like my coffee with some creamer, but my husband drinks it black.
I have to have coffee to start my day, it puts me in a better mood. I like a little cream!
Love this. Wish it was open when I was there!!!!
Got to say, I like mine with cream as well. But I’m a purist – no flavours – just the good old perfection of God’s handiwork in those beans. All natural!!
I adore any kind of coffee! I’d love to try this coffee, esp as I have relatives in Kihei, so I think about Maui and the wonderful foods that grow there! Nothing, not even a shopping spree to Rodeo Drive could get me out of bed faster than a great cup of delicious coffee!! It is the most special thing to me!!! It makes my heart sing. I love medium, dark, and luv organic, flavored (any flavor). I typically drink my coffee with 2% milk (used to be light cream, but now this). It is an adventure in itself to try new coffees!
My stepdad is in love with this coffee shop. He especially likes the coffee from Molokai. I really like the mocha freeze which I think is made with ice cream.
oh my goodness–that mocha freeze is amazing! Thanks for commenting.
I LOVE coffee. Like love it so much I would marry it. My husband and I splurged on several pounds of Kona coffee on our honeymoon in Kona. We went on a plantation tour at Kona Blue Sky Coffee Co. on Mt Hualalai. It was one of the highlights of our trip. The girl working the shop was clearly on WAY too much coffee and had the energy of both of my kids combined and then some!
My normal cup of coffee is Kona with stevia and a splash of organic heavy cream. Sometimes I do coconut milk and if I do iced coffee its always with coconut milk. Did I mention I love coffee?
And I DIED at that Brian Regan clip. He is one of my fave comedians. So so funny.
So there I am reading along thinking to myself “I drove that route past the Dole Plantation almost many times during my visit to Hawaii, how did I not stop here. I mean I am addicted to coffee, like seriously a 2 espresso drinks a day kinda addicted. And then I got to the part about them only being open 6 months and it all made since to me since that would be after my visit, and suddenly I was all sad that I missed something that is obviously so epic-ally awesome.
I love coffee so much I have a drink named after me. Not joking, i order it so often that the owner of the coffee shop at the hospital here in Mac has named a drink after me, you can walk up and order a “Sandy”. If you do, you will an Iced Americano with Sugar Free Vanilla and a shot of half-and-half (for the weight watcher, calorie counting crowd it’s about a 40 calorie drink). One of the gals in radiology orders a “Dirty Sandy”, I hear it quite comical to see the when she sends one of the guys to order for her cause they really don’t get it. For the record a dirty sandy is regular vanilla flavor instead of sugar free.
I also am quite fond of skinny caramel mochas with whipped cream. And have you tried those Starbucks refreshers? Those canned fizzy fruity flavored drinks that have green coffee in them. I am particularly fond of the strawberry lemonade flavor.
Okay I think I gave myself a caffeine headache talking about that much coffee without actually drinking any while doing it.
I love me some coffee! It all depends on what kind of coffee it is. If its 100% Kona like it straight black with a cube of sugar. (weee! haha) Any other kind of coffee its a splash of half & half, with two cubes of sugar. I tried a sample of Green world’s Kona coffee straight black, it was simply THE BEST! I drive by Green world all the time…I work in Wahiawa. No matter which road I take (the Snake road or the Dole road) I can’t miss it!
I started on coffee many years ago when I started my long hours, stressful career fresh out of college. The daily trip to the coffee shop before my shift was the most consistent and welcoming part of my day. Now as a stay at home with three young boys, a dog and a nutty husband…. Well, I dream of that familiar gurgle from my coffe machine in my quiet house before the chaos. The click when the pot is done. That first cup makes everything right. I like it with a wee but of flavored creamer. Hot, even in 98 degree humidity.
Oh wow what a fantastic place! Looks like so much fun to visit! It reminds me of a coffee/espresso cafe around the corner from my house. They roast their own, but, they have to go to some fairly remote places in the world to get the coffee beans. I can’t imagine drinking coffee that was grown and roasted right THERE! Anyways, I’m a latte girl. In the winter I like’em hot, in the summer, iced. Cinnamon dolce, caramel, pumpkin spice are my top favorite flavors. 😀 Please keep us updated when their website is ready for online orders!
I’m a fan of iced coffee with half and half, especially in the summertime. Good stuff
Oh boy, I can’t wait to go there. That would not have been a bad drive from Mililani…
Love this place. We go by there every Sunday on the way to church. As you said they are all si nice. I love lattes. I always get my coconut nonfat latte and something to eat. They have some delicious scones and muffins. They also have a bagel hot dog that is good. You have to try their different types of fruit bars, lemon and blueberry and others. Great place for breakfast.
Recently discovered your blog and am loving catching up with all of your posts! I too share your love of coffee, but I like mine with just a splash of milk. There is nothing as wonderful as a hot, freshly ground and brewed cup of coffee on a crisp fall morning to warm you up and wake you up!
I’m not a big coffee drinker, but my sister loves it! She dreams of retiring in Hawaii (only 20 years to go) and always brings backs several pounds of coffee each time they visit the islands. So being the kind sister, I would give her this little treat.
When we had our North Shore holiday in February we stopped by here every morning! I miss it so much! I loved my coffee just straight up black! Especially their 100% Kona. So good!!
My love affair with coffee started very young…I started drinking it when I was about five! (Okay, it’s a little young but it’s probably better than drinking soda, right?) Depending where I am in the world, I take my coffee in different ways. When I’m in the Middle East I love drinking Turkish coffee and when I’m in Germany I love a rich Milchkaffee (extra-foam latte). In San Francisco I take a Blue Bottle espresso, in Hawaii I love Kona-grown fresh, and here in NYC I usually have a cappuccino.
That is a great idea! A coffee plantation & coffee bar on the North Shore. And it’s a beautiful sitting area. I will definitely be ordering some once they get their website up.
So….how do I like my coffee?? Sitting next to my BFF, in Hawaii, relaxing and “talking story”. That’s how I prefer it. But lately it’s been dark roast with a splash of Vanilla Silk Soymilk sitting alone at my computer at 5:30 a.m. reading the “Grommom” blog!!
Do I get extra points for being Comment #1??
XOXO
