A Hawaiian Night Sky

Living in the country will always have some pros and cons.   After spending part of my day in Honolulu, then hauling groceries home from Costco today, the drive back to our house seemed very long.

But one thing that seems to make it all worthwhile is the view from our front lanai.   Looking out over the North Shore as the sun sets has to be one of the best parts of each day.

IMG_0733And on a cloudless night, the country sky is spectacular.  There are really no lights anywhere around us to spoil the view.
This is how the sky looked as we finished dinner tonight.  It’s so awesome to see the stars shining before the sun even sets.  Orion’s Belt was the first thing we saw tonight.

Then Dave spent some time outside with the camera, so that he could capture the Big Dipper right in our back yard..Through the palm trees.  See it?

Something about looking at a star-filled sky seems to put things in perspective for me:
Me.  Our World.  The Universe.  Creator God.
Small, big, bigger, Biggest.
And I’m blown away as I consider that the Creator of it all cares for the smallest of all in me.
And then I have to stop thinking because my brain hurts.

But I wanted to share this with you.

Have you guys gone outside to watch the meteor showers? We keep track of them on our calendar and go out on the evenings or very early on the morning of the peak and look for the “shooting stars”. I bet your view would be fantastic!! I should plan my next visit during a peak meteor shower. I can dream…..

Yes you should–and yes, we have! It’s awesome. I keep saying that we should do a family sleep out it is so beautiful out there–I’m just so afraid of centipedes. 🙂 Let’s plan that star-gazing meteor shower visit, oK? 🙂 Aloha!

This is awesome. Great photos Dave. I have to agree- one of the best things about the country- the stars are amazing. That said, the BEST stars I’ve ever seen were from a small boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The next lights (aside from our navigation lights) were over 300kms away. The stars on that night were AMAZING!

Speaking of Amazing, if you like to be blow away by how big god is, you’ve got to check out the video that Francis Chan has on his Crazy Love website. Here’s the link – it’ll blow your mind… http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=LpChZxPfa-c&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DLpChZxPfa-c

Anyway, thanks for another great post!

Greg (all the way from Australia, where we can also see quite a few of those installations…)
