I've been slightly obsessed with roasting vegetables lately. And since my promise to you has always been to share what our family is actually eating, I figured I ought to share. We've been eating roasted veggies along with all kinds of things: With fish, steak, garden burgers, or just on their own as leftovers for lunch. (Mmmmm)Roasted veggies are so easy, and so, so good.I think most kids appreciate roasted veggies, especially if you nail the whole slightly-crispy, plenty-of- salt

Talking to your teens/tweens about their future
Recently, one of my sons seemed a little off. Before bed I finally just asked him what was going on. He spilled out then that he was feeling super stressed about his future. In my head, I was like, "What!? You're hardly a teenager! What is there to stress about?" but I held back. He went on to confess that he sometimes lays awake at night concerned about what kind of job he'll have, how he'll provide for a family, and on and on.It kind of broke my heart to think my kid was carrying
Grandma’s Quick and Easy “Pantry Soup.”
As I mentioned in last week's post, my son Josiah and I took off last week for a quick visit with my family in Gig Harbor, Washington. We made the visit to attend my Uncle’s funeral, so we knew the visit would be a combination of happy and sad. The weather was supposed to be cold and rainy, but we were pleasantly surprised by quite a bit of sun. If you've been to Gig Harbor then you know that it's hard to beat the beauty there on a clear day. Here's the view from my parents' front porch:
Conversations with our kids, Part I: Identity and Image
Welcome to the first post in my new series: "Conversations to have with your teens/tweens now" (click here for the introduction.) Today I want to talk about the uber-important, all-consuming, (seemingly) life or death topic of Teens/Tweens and IMAGE.This is an important topic because whether you talk about it or not, I guarantee it is on your kid's mind. The teenage years have always been a time of wrestling with issues of identity and self-image. The teen years are filled with
Important Conversations to have with your Teen/Tween now: A new mini-series
Something happens to time right about when our kids begin Jr. High and High School. Instead of the days creeping by ever-so-slowly like they seemed to in the early years (remember that?!) suddenly there is a shift in the universe; In the blink of an eye, time speeds up. The days fly by. Our kids go from being merely children, to adolescence...teenagers. They grow inches while they sleep...everything changes, and adulthood? Is lurking just around the corner. When we hit these years it is
Vacations and Weight Gain: 7 Tips to help you stay on track when you travel
Meet Jane. Since the new year, Jane has been working hard to create new lifestyle habits: making better food choices, eating less, and exercising regularly. Her clothes are fitting better and better, and if she has dared to step on a scale (though I told her not to,) the numbers have gone down. Down! This is amazing. She feels great! She has more energy. She is sleeping better, and yelling at her kids less. Even more: Jane is confident that by summer she'll be feeling good in her own
3 Burrito Bowls Your Family Will Love
When you serve a meal that makes your kids say (and I quote) "I could eat this every single night!" you know you did something right. But when that meal happens to be filled with: healthy protein, a rainbow variety of veggies, wholesome (gluten-free) grains, and it is served in one simple bowl (hello easy cleanup) then you're basically high-fiving your own bad self. So let's talk burrito bowls.Rice bowls?I don't know, call them what you like, but they are our family's latest
And Still She Laughs: Kate Merrick’s book release (and a giveaway!)
If you happened to be a part of this blog community back in the early days (I was so young! So were you! Weren't we cute?) you may remember a few posts where I shared links to a site called prayfordaisy.com. I didn't personally know the Merrick family then, but our church and some of our friends were very connected to Britt, who is the Pastor of Reality Church in Carpenteria, California, and his wife Kate and their kids Isaiah and Daisy. When I heard that Daisy was diagnosed with cancer at
